It’s difficult to be your mother’s brain as Alzheimer’s takes over her body and mind. I explored this idea in a personal essay for D Magazine.
The Rumpus
I had hoped to take my mother back to her hometown in Mexico before Alzheimer’s made it impossible for her to travel. But the violence in Mexico prohibited that trip. Instead, I made the journey with some cousins and in the process unraveled a family mystery.
Call of the River
This was a four-part series in which photographer Erich Schlegel and I traveled the Rio Grande from its headwaters in Colorado to where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico in South Texas. Erich and I grew up along different parts of the river. On this journey we met with, broke bread with, and listened to the stories of people who live along the river. The Rio Grande means different things to those who have spent their lives along its 1,900 length — a livelihood, a boundary, a blessing. My life was enriched by learning what this body of water means to others.
